The Match
1886 On January 11, the WC match against Steinitz in the USA began. On March 29, 1886, Steinitz was declared the winner.
Zukertort lost with 5 wins, 10 losses and 5 draws. This was the first official World Championship match.
The match was played in New York, St. Louis, and New Orleans. It is said that at a dinner attended by both Steinitz and Zukertort, a toast was made to the greatest chess player in the world. Both Steinitz and Zukertort rose at the same time. However, critics consider this story somewhat embellished.
