Follow the development of the chess database



I’ve taken on the more or less monstrous task of coding a large chess database containing nearly 10 million games, along with an interface to access the database.

This involves massive data transfers, which is the main technical challenge to solve—but I’m fully confident I’ll manage it. The only question is how much work it will require from me. I’m also working intensively on creating an intuitive and fast interface for various types of searches.

I plan to open a forum for users and to make the code open source.

GOALS

The database will reflect the historical development of played games and serve as an open reference base for anyone.

The games come from official sources, and once the database is fully operational, it will include automatic updates from The Week in Chess.

Vision:

That it will eventually be hosted on an independent public platform and continuously updated by enthusiastic open-source developers.

An alpha/beta 1.0 version can be found here—it’s far from up to date at the moment, but it gives a rough idea of how the interface will look and function:
